NFL Betting – Watch the Numbers

The sports betting world loves betting on NFL football. In fact, the NFL is one of the most popular leagues for people to bet on in the entire world. Superbowl betting brings out the bettor in everyone and the availability of online betting helps even the casual fan to place a bet. As you place your bet on NFL football, you need to keep an eye on the numbers to make sure you are placing a winning bet. In this case, the numbers are referring to the point spread.

The most common margin of victory in all NFL games is three points. More games are decided by exactly three points than any other of potential margin of victory available. Whether you write for a hockey blog or follow NFL games closely, understanding the most common margin for victory is extremely important. Many odds makers will play around with that point differential to entice you to make a different kind of bet than you had planned on. It is up to you whether or not you fall for it and change your bet based on the point spread.

A really good example of odds makers enticing bettors is the line on Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants are the underdogs, but there is still a lot of action on New York. The odds makers moved the line to -2 ½ for the New England Patriots. That means if the Patriots win by three points, then your bet is still good. A line of -3 would null all bets on the Pats if New England won by three points. This makes a bet on the Patriots more enticing as the odds makers attempt to shift some of the action away from the Giants. Is Las Vegas doing this on purpose? It is hard to tell. But if you wanted to bet on the Patriots in the past and the -3 line scared you away, then this is your chance to place your bet without the fear of losing out to a close game.

NFL Betting: Betting on the Super Bowl

The online sportsbook websites are starting to see a lot of action for the upcoming Super Bowl and that presents an opportunity for everyone. The great thing about Superbowl betting is that people who have never placed a bet before often give it a try for Super Bowl Sunday. To help those people along who have never placed a bet before, here is some basic information on how to bet on the Super Bowl.

When you look at a betting page for the Super Bowl, you will notice that one team has a positive number next to it and the other team has a negative number. You will also notice that the number, with the exception of the positive and negative, is the same. This is what is referred to as the betting line on that game. The team with the negative number is the favorite and is giving up that many points to the other team. For example, if the Patriots are playing the Giants and the Patriots have a line of -7, then the betting websites have the game a 7-0 in favor of the Giants before the ball is even kicked off.

In order to be considered the winner against the line, the Patriots would have to score at least eight more points than the Giants. If the Patriots win by seven points, then the bet is a push and no one wins. If the Patriots win by six points or less, then you lose the bet if you placed your wager on the Patriots. However, if you bet on the Giants, then you won the game. It can seem like a betonline scam to people who are new to the betting game, but it can make watching the Super Bowl much more interesting when you have a point spread to consider.

Understanding Football Betting Lines

The average gambler can sometimes look at NFL betting lines and get a little confused as to what those lines mean. How do you win? How do you lose? The price per head bookie websites will give you several ways to bet on football games. The easiest ones to understand are usually the ones that most people follow. Let’s take a quick look at football betting lines and how they work.

Let’s say you had a line that looked like this:

Buffalo Bills -3

New England Patriots +3

This means that the Bills are spotting the Patriots three points right out of the gate. If you bet on the Bills, then the Bills need to win by four or more points for your bet to be good. If you bet on the Patriots, then the Patriots just need to win outright or lose by two points or less. If the Bills win by exactly three points, then the bet is a push and you get your money back.

Another kind of NFL bet is when you bet on the NFL scores themselves. This is called an over/under bet. Let’s say that the over/under on the previous example was 38 points. You can bet that the combined score between the two teams will either be under or over 38 points. If the game winds up with the two teams scoring a combined 38 points, then it is a push and your money is refunded. Remember that the over/under is always the combined score of both teams. Some websites will allow you to bet the over/under on an individual team, but you need to read the website closely to make sure that you understand what you are betting on.

NFL Week 8 Game Predictions

As the Breeder’s Cup betting approaches, there will be some NFL teams that finally start to pick themselves up and head towards a playoff spot. Long-suffering fans in some NFL cities will start to see signs of the teams that they had thought would be there all along as the hyped teams pick up much needed wins.

Minnesota Vikings @ Carolina Panthers (-3)

With all due respect to Donovan McNabb, the only thing that was holding the Vikings back was the quarterback position. The price per head bookmaking experts see potential with rookie quarterback Christian Ponder under center and this could be the beginning of a better season for Minnesota.

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles (-3 ½)

The Philadelphia Eagles are a good football team and the Cowboys are an average football team. Look for quarterback Michael Vick to continue to rally the Eagles to win big divisional games such as this one. The Eagles do have the tools to be a very good football team, but the new players needed to mix with the existing players before the Eagles could be a winning team. The mixing is done and the winning can now begin.

Pick: Philadelphia Eagles

San Diego Chargers (-3 ½) @ Kansas City Chiefs

Even with star running back Jamaal Charles out for the season, the Chiefs keep on winning. The Chargers are turning out to be a betonline scam that is unable to win big games this season. It may be time to look to someone other than Norv Turner to coach the emotional Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers.

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

NFL Week 4 Storylines To Keep An Eye On

Heading into week four of the 2011 NFL betting lines season, bettors have plenty to think about. From Detroit and Buffalo being two of the three remaining undefeated teams, to questions surrounding the running back position, there has been more to handicap this year then any other before it. Today we will be looking at the biggest fishing games stories before game time.

Buffalo Bills – The Buffalo Bills have appeared as giant killers to start off the season. Firstly, they took out 2010 AFC West division champions Kansas City in convincing fashion in week one. They then followed up that victory with an impressive come from behind win against the biggest sports betting fan base in the NFL, the Oakland Raiders. Last week, the Bills topped off the dream season, by taking out the Evil Empire led by Tom Brady. This week, are the Bills going to continue to roll by taking out a bad Cincinnati Bengals team, or will they over look Andy Dalton and company and lose outright?

Pittsburgh Steelers experiencing a Super Bowl hangover? – Despite not winning the Super Bowl back in February, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been shaky in two of their three contests this season. Currently sitting at one and two, the Steelers were destroyed by Baltimore week one, decimated a bad Seattle team, and then almost lost to a horrific Indianapolis team. This week, Pittsburgh heads to Texas, where they get to be the punching bag for a Texans team finally ready to take the next step in their development.

Is Detroit For Real? – After decimating Tampa Bay and Kansas City and then coming from behind to take out Minnesota, can the Detroit Lions take out America’s team this week? If Detroit and in particular quarterback Matthew Stafford is for real, can he get the Lions to their first playoff appearance in nearly 15 years?
